OCT is the advanced eye scan for all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waved to image the different layers that make up the structure of the font and back of the eye. The OCT machine captures both a photograph and a cross-section scan of the eye at the same time.
This service comes with a nominal fee of £35, as it serves as an invaluable diagnostic tool for our optometrists. While we recognize that not all patients may opt for this paid service, it allows us to maintain the high standard of diagnostic precision that sets us apart. Currently, this fee is not covered by the NHS examination fee. We remain committed to providing exceptional care and utilising advanced diagnostic tools to ensure the well-being of our patients.
Utilizing cutting-edge 3D OCT technology, your optometrist will capture a digital photo and a three-dimensional cross-sectional scan of your eye's posterior during a single session. This enables swift and early identification of various common eye conditions. The non-invasive, painless, and efficient scan, along with automated software, can detect even subtle retinal changes in each eye examination. This provides valuable and continuous records of your eye health and condition.
Common ocular conditions would include cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Less common conditions such as macular hole, retinal detachments and vitreous detachments are also detected. Each condition varies in its effects on vision and may require different approaches to management or treatment. If you have specific concerns, this can be discussed during your eye examination.
