The Team:

Anita Brady BSc(Hons) MCOptom

Anita graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1992 and then undertook her pre-registration training year in Oxford which involved clinical sessions at the Oxford Eye Hospital.

Following registration as an Optometrist she continued to work for Batemans in Wiltshire and Hampshire during which time she developed her interest in low vision by holding regular clinics at the Wessex Sight Centre in Salisbury. 

Anita moved to Torrington in January 2000 and worked throughout North Devon as a mobile optometrist until establishing A&J Opticians in Torrington with James Taylor-Short in 2008.

James Taylor-Short

James qualified as a Dispensing Optician at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and has been in the optical industry since 1998 undertaking a variety of different roles from making glasses, assessing low vision needs, practice management and finally settling with his passion for fashionable eyewear.

James will talk to you about your visual requirements and fashion desires, assisting you in making the best choice of frame to suit you from A&J's wide selection of eyewear.

Outside of work James is the Station officer for the local Coastguard Team and is the only Search and Rescue Dog handler located in the North Devon Area. He has a young family, enjoys surfing, mountaineering and playing the piano and guitar.

Tracey Cole FBDO

Tracey has worked in optics since 1992 and qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 1996 from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge.

She has worked in many different areas of the optical industry and is pleased to be back in an independent practice where she can use her knowledge and experience to find you the perfect pair of spectacles.

Tracey works with us part time and when she’s not at A&J Opticians she enjoys running, photography and chasing after her two year old son!

Pam Cooper

Pam is our Dispensing Assistant and is currently studying Optical Practice Support Level 2. She aids our Dispensing Opticians by helping patients to choose frames, adjust spectacles and undertaking repairs. Pam also supports the receptionist team by helping with admin work.


Pam worked at an independent opticians for five years before joining the team at A&J Opticians in October 2011. Her interests include walking & cycling on the Tarka Trail, cooking and getting stuck into a good book.

Reception Staff

Hollie, Anita and Lorraine make up our friendly and helpful Receptionist and Admin team. As well as being responsible for the day to day administration tasks they can also help with repairs and keep patients up to date with the progress of spectacle and contact lens orders.

They are able to advise on optical accessories such as sunclips, prescription swimming goggles and cleaning aids.
